uni·kaurn | \ ˈyü-nə-ˌkaurn  \
Definition of Unikaurn
Kaur means  “warrior princess / lioness ” and represents “equality” and is a common surname given to Sikh Indian women. Combine this with the word Unicorn which mean exceptional and in this instance Unikaurns are the backbone of thriving families, communities and economies – thus Project Unikaurn was born.

Women earned $0.87 for every dollar earned by men  - Statistics Canada

If my little girls – who are of Indian and Indigenous ethnicity – were grown women today they would be marginalized (overworked and underpaid) for simply being born female, and on top of that women of colour,  and even worse if they chose to become moms.  We have to do better for all women of today and make sure the future is better for the little lady leaders in our lives we are raising.

Even when it comes to household, childcare & unpaid work care responsibilities – women are taking it on in addition to their careers – this is humanly impossible but here we are being Unikaurns. Accommodation, awareness, education, programs and policy changes are required to support our mental health and financial well being, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was my little ones’ that triggered this brainchild in 2018. Together, after almost two years in the making, Project Unikaurn is official. We want to be a changemaker that disrupts the status quo and create policy, support and advocacy. Project Unikaurn focuses on three areas of focus to combat gender inequalities. Join us in this journey and support the cause as a customer, sponsor, expert contributor, podcast guest, advocate, social media follower or influencer. Let’s do better.  – Ruby Kaur Gill

What's our plan?

Project Unikaurn has a strategy that we’ve placed in three rainbow filled buckets full of promise.

First, we want to build awareness and make change locally with people, companies and municipalities we are in proximity to. Create a universal charter declaring support.

Second, we want to tackle change in policy and lobby the government to give more funding and support for our working moms. We want to do what Jacinda Arden has done in New Zealand – end the gender wage gap, provide support and programs for women in the workforce and at home and educate the non empathetic to this cause so they know what the new normal should look like.

Lastly, we want to give women access to education in India as a global initiative and support Indigenous and Indian women entrepreneurs across Canada.

With the help of our awareness efforts through our podcast, Influential UniKaurns Who Inspire profiles, Snitch Line and supporting A UniKaurn in Need program – we will increase and apply the pressure required to advocate for change.

How in the world are we going to do all of this? Well don’t forget we are Unikaurns and have this magical knack for making impossible things become a reality. Also we’d also like to add one more to-do to the list while we are at it;  we’d like the word “UniKaurn” officially added to the urban dictionary.
